Donuts Recipe: How to Make the Best Donuts

Necesary Tools

  • Large mixing bowl

  • Hand or stand mixer (optional)

  • Rolling pin

  • Doughnut cutter or two round cutters in different sizes

  • Deep fryer or deep fryer

  • Cooking thermometer

  • Skimmer or frying tongs

  • Cooling rack

  • Paper towel

  • Small bowl for glaze

Ingredients

  • 500g wheat flour

  • 200ml warm milk

  • 60g sugar

  • 7g dry yeast

  • 2 eggs

  • 60g melted butter

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Oil for frying

  • 200g powdered sugar for the glaze

  • 3-4 tablespoons of milk or water for the glaze

Step-by-step preparation

  1. Yeast activation: In a small bowl, mix the yeast with the warm milk and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Preparation of the dough: In a large bowl, mix the flour, remaining sugar and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter and vanilla extract. Knead until dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.

  3. First fermentation: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

  4. Forming the doughnuts: On a floured surface, roll out the dough until it is about 1 cm thick. Use a doughnut cutter or two round cutters to form the doughnuts.

  5. Second fermentation: Place the cut doughnuts on floured trays, cover and let them rest for another 30 minutes.

  6. Frying: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  7. Glaze: Mix the powdered sugar with enough milk or water to make a smooth glaze. Dip the warm donuts in the glaze and place on a rack to dry.

  8. Serve: Enjoy the donuts when the glaze has hardened slightly, but they are still warm.

Tips

  • Keep the oil temperature constant to ensure even frying.

  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much.

  • Not over kneading the dough will help the doughnuts to be fluffier.

  • Experiment with different flavors such as chocolate, strawberry or maple for the glaze.

  • The donuts are best the day they are made, but you can store them in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
